Energy / My Rocket Stove
« on: January 11, 2022, 09:47:57 AM »
Ernie has been talking about rocket stoves lately. This is the one I've designed and have been using for 7 years.

Designed in blender

Made from 1/4" steel. Weighs about 500 lbs.

Powdercoated

Lined with firebrick and a custom heat riser so fire never touches the steel. Have had to replace bricks & risers over the years, but zero damage to the steel.

I've been able to heat my ~1500sq.ft home on about 2.5 cords of wood per year/season. I haven't used a traditional wood stove for comparison, but would guess the rocket stove uses 1/2 the wood of a traditional stove.

I also reduced my propane cost by ~70%

Here are the build plans I gave to the fabricator.

Got a lot of ideas from this guy (Youtube). He has a lot of videos building and upgrading his stove.

What would I change?

The tolerances were a little too small for the bricks. So when replacing the bricks, I have to trim them to fit.
I didn't add a secondary air intake to deliver clean, preheated air to the base of the heat riser. This is supposed to increase performance/efficiency.

Design / Phoenix Fighter
« on: January 11, 2022, 09:36:05 AM »
Davi had sketched up the Phoenix fighter (PDF). I started modelling in blender, but got frustrated rigging the ship to have fully collapsable bird wings and stopped working on it. It also needs retractable legs.

I can provide what blender files I have if someone wants to continue working on it.

Contest / Cargo Design
« on: October 08, 2018, 08:55:23 AM »
The standard cargo hold is a basic design. Just a big open space. The current docking design uses mooring lines and a clamping system that "pulls" the ship to the cargo hold. See the cargo design thread for details.

You can design any style of "cargo" you like as long as it matches the current docking design. Of course, if you can design a better docking system, your input is welcome.

This thread is for submitting alternate cargo designs. The ship doesn't just have to move cargo. It could also move structures as long as the mating system matches the ship and the ship is capable of lifting the total weight.

As an example, the ship could deliver a 30,000 sq.ft. factory with the docking system integrated into the building structure.

Download the full ship model in Blender and design your own cargo option.

Post your work or suggestions for alternate cargo designs in this thread.

Contest / Contest Rules
« on: October 07, 2018, 01:40:08 PM »
The Precariat Design Contest forum is for posting discussion & designs for the interior of the ship.

https://precariat.us.to/GetFile/LA1Gk/dl" alt="" class="bbc_img" />

Front levels are for commercial passenger & crew members.

Top levels are for commercial cruise cabins with full height windows that span the entire ship.

Rear levels are for engineering, maintenance, and mechanical operation of the ship.

All 15 levels of the ship are connected with freight & passenger elevators...

Rear level cutaway...

All levels contain their own topic/thread with details about each level. Post your design ideas, sketches, & renderings in the appropriate thread.

Check this thread for future contest details.

Contest / Launch Bay / Rear Level 4
« on: October 07, 2018, 01:18:40 PM »
[/img]

Rear Level 4 contains 7,767 sq.ft. of floor space.

Rough use of the levels has been outlined in the Subsystems thread.

This level is the hangar deck for the ship. It could contain launch systems, launch catapult, and fighter ships. Landing vehicles would likely be vertical or short landing craft since the launch bay is only 137' long!

Below is an overview of the floor plan. Click the image to download a 1' grid version for sketching up your floor plan.

[/img]

This level is 23' high including space for flooring, life support (HVAC), plumbing, or any cabling needed to run the ship. Download the full ship model in Blender for a 3D model of the available space.

Of course the levels aren't "set in stone". They are a starting point. If you feel a level height should be modified, do your design, and make your case for the change. Everything is open to suggestion if you can make a compelling case.

Post your work or suggestions for Rear Level 4 in this thread.
